Title: Big Bear California Run - Hanna Flat (Toyota vs Dodge)
Post by: hilton8r on June 14, 2006, 02:50:12 PM
I figure we will arrive sometime Friday and leave sometime Sunday. Indicate if you would like to arrive a day early on Thursday or leave a day later on Monday. Or is there some other configuration of days that is better? Indicate if there are other folks you would like to bring or invite. Is Rahn anywhere in the state? I wonder if Mike T. will have his rig put back together? At least provide initial head/vehicle counts. We are allowed 8 people and 1 vehicle per camp site for $18 per night. We can pay an extra $5 per vehicle after we arrive. Toyotas have to pay extra because they suck. ;D Don't forget to bring my case of beer. ;D Oh, and you have to shut your pie holes between 10pm and 6am... ;D

Post up and let's get this thing reserved and on the calender. Damn skippy!

Didn't I say mid August would be good?  I must have been sleepy cause I forgot I already have this stuff going on.

8/19 Niece's Wedding
8/26 Cruise to Mexico

I voted 8/12 but could probably make 8/5 also.

I voted for any of the above. Hell, you go to Big Bear and I'll take the cruise to Mexico. I don't mind helping out a friend. ;D I'm glad to see you are anxious to 'get it on' sooner than later. For a second there, I thought you were trying to back out and forfeit the bet. ;D

Don't want to be to far away either.  We don't want Jed having any "accidents".

I wasn't going to name any names, but I'd like to give Jed plenty of space to doo doo what he's got to doo doo. ;D

I've been informed by my boss that our cruise is Mon-Thurs so the 26th is available for me.
I will have just returned from Mexico so it wouldn't be the best choice for me but if ends up being the best for others I can do it.

I voted for the later. I have a boat load of work to do on my junk. It will give me more time. The hardest part is figuring out where to have my accident. Let's see ......Hiltmans sleeping bag or Earl's sleeping bag.... ???.........................................................................................................................

I guess it's Bill's turn to vote. I was worried about having four choices for roughly four people... I know what you mean about more time Jed, but it never 'all' gets done. :P The sooner the better for the Dodge guys.

I'm not sure what would work for me or if I can go. I'm trying to figure out if and when I'm having surgery so I may or may not be available. I'll do my best though. Can't be the 26th for me at all. MY bosses birthday is that weekend.

Earl and Jed, stop right there..... It's knee surgery, not a sex change, spine transplant or anything else you jokers were going to suggest. Thanks for your support fellas  :-*

Maybe you can have the surgery performed by Jed and Earl at Big Bear.  :P Keep us posted as your plans unfold Bill. Hopefully, it's arthoscopic(sp?)...

Sorry, been busy. It would take a lot more than that to hurt my feelings. If I was that easily offended I'd have never made it in my family. We are all a bunch of jokers and NOTHING is off limits with my family. Good training for the real world!  ;D

That being said I am having a hard time laughing about my knee. It's pretty bad. Might be time for a new one. x rays didn't look good at all. Not much left in there to work with. Worst part is the 10 years I've been on limited duties have softened the bones to the point they might not even be able to do a replacement anymore. I'm going to see the best in the biz as soon as the referral is approved (love insurance companies) and we'll see what he has to say. Until then I'll try to laugh  about it :-\  Nothing else seems to help, right? Worse comes to worse I can get cool bionic leg and finally loose some weight! Those things are what, about two pounds? I guess there are easier ways to loose a few pounds, huh?

Now for my official responce.....Good one fellas .........  :(

Yeah, it's a little scary. Can I still push a gas pedal with a peg leg? Sounds like a good way to get out of speeding tickets, huh? Sorry officer, I'm still getting used to the new leg.......You wouldn't give a ticket to a cripple, now would you? HEHE

I'm sure it will be OK. They manage to give 800 year old ladies new knees and I can't imagine mine is any worse then theirs. The second doc was just a real A-hole. On to the third....forth....fifth....whatever it takes.

NEVER-EVER go see Dr. Scott Graham in Laguna Hills. Just a warning.

Tell you what, in order to assure instant gratification Jed and I will each agree to bring a case of your Coors Light and you and Bill each agree to bring a case of Bud Light.  Regardless of outcome, everyone has their own case of beer and the winners (if there even are winners) just walk away with bragging rights (at least until the "rematch").  Anyone who forgets to bring their beer will be sent to the store and made to pay double. ;D

Oh, and bring my chairs too. ;)

I talked to Dave today. We'd like to get one more Dodge up there to whoop some Toyota ass. Quit asking so many questions... We may or may not have many secret weapons, but we want to keep you in the dark. Haven't heard from Ross in a long time. I emailed Mike T. a couple weeks ago, but haven't heard back. He usually gets back to me though. I assume Rahn is gone... I liked Rahn, even though he drove a Ford... Sorry Andy... :P

Ok, I stayed in 67 last time.  It was a pretty nice spot back in the corner.   68 is probably the nicest spot in the place, would be great combined with 67 but it is booked for every date but the 19th and that is my niece's wedding. :'(    60-61-62 make a nice grouping and are fairly large for the site (listed at 35')  as of this posting they are all available for the 25-26th.

BTW:  I was looking at www.reserveamerica.com for availabilty and the map.  I used them last year for this campground and it worked fine.

Sorry for being MIA on this one.

If I can get the RC up and running, I'll be more than happy to make Big Bear the shakedown run.  I think we have about a 50/50 chance of getting it minimally operational, so I didn't want to chime in too early.  It kinda sucks being 100 miles away.

We (John and I with Bill pointing and looking crippled ;) ) worked on it this past Sunday, and actually got a lot done.  A few more weekends like that, and it'll be good to go.  I'll keep you all posted.

Also, I don't think I'll make the camping part, but I'll try to at least make it a day trip - it's only an hour to BB for me.

The way I see it... the showdown will be the 12th. It's the only date that seems to make sense at this point... Earl voted for it. It's after the 10th, so Jed's happy. It's not the 26th, so Bill won't get divorced/killed for it, and I think the sooner the better considering all of the progress that the Toyota Boys have been posting. What do all y'all say... Let's ink it... We'll put Bill on the maybe list depending on his knee, but I'll do what I can to help Dave wrap up his rig... Respond ASAP. I'm glad Earl is familiar with the sites, so I look forward to his site suggestion. Dodge rules! ;D And PS... You guys are in really deep doo doo if Mike T. surfaces... :o

I'm in the process of booking site #62... Of course I forgot my friggin credit card today... I really hate to be Earl's neighbor, but it's pretty close to Mike so I can deal.

Update... I have reserved site #62. That is if my Mom's credit card goes through. Now I have to worry about if I lost my credit card at Carl's Jr. or if it's at home. Hell if I know why it's not in my wallet next to my losing lottery ticket. ::)

Oh yeah, like that wasn't planned. You are right next to the shitter. I was told on the phone, that you can pay an extra $5 per extra car when you get there... I'm really confused how this whole thing works. I though multiple parties could go in on a camp spot, but Bill explained that this is not the case. Space is pretty limited. Is a tow vehicle, trailer, and rig allowed?

I just realized that this is the only pic I have of the R/C... Certainly no action pics. I guess I'll have to be sure my camera is charged up this time. I only got a few pics of Jed on our last outing. I'm going to paint her orange with a big ol' '01' on the door this weekend. I won't bother with the confederate flag since the top should be coming off. Although, no roll cage yet. Maybe I'll keep the top on for Big Bear. :-\

You will be fine.  I don't know about 59 (did you check to see how long it is?) but many of the spots will accomodate two vehicles, plus there is an extra vehicle parking area right there ($5 per day).  I will probably only have the 4runner.  If I need anything I can just ferry it from home since it is only 20-30 minutes away. ;D

I have some pics of some of the camsites from 1-year ago scouting for a Pirate get together.  I'll get them up here shortly.

Here we go.

Extra vehicle parking area.  $5/day  The RV in the backround on the left is spot 61.

Another agle on spot 61.  This was a pretty damn big RV.  Spot 62 behind it.

Another angle on 62 and another good sized RV with a Jeep or something parked in front of it.

That's all I have of the area we've chosen.  I'm sure that I'll be making a trip up to the area befor the run.  I'll check it out again if I get the chance.

The computer thingy wouldn't let my pass until I changed the number of vehicles back to one. Do you think they will let take the cummins, trailer and the runner in?

The computer thingy wouldn't let my pass until I changed the number of vehicles back to one. Do you think they will let take the cummins, trailer and the runner in?

Main problem for you is your trailer is so god damned long!  I'm thinking that your spot might be a little smallish (listed at 25-feet)  There is definetely room for two normal vehicles in mine.  Right now I'm thinking our options are

1)  Park the trailer in my space first, then my 4runner so I can get in and out, CTD in yours with the camper, your 4runner in the "extra parking" area.  Only thing there is that there is no guarantee that the extra parking will be free.   It looks big in that pic but I bet it only holds 3, maybe 4-cars max.

2)  Drop your trailer at my house.   The driveway had better be clear by then.  2 4runners in my space, CTD in yours.

I'll only have one car in mine. There is no way to get my Jeep and RC and Dave's RC and John's RC all done in time. No Barbie mobile. Actually, isn't it the "Ken moblie"? After all it is yellow.

My extra spot might go to John's trailer but trailers don't count as an extra car generally. My site is only 20' long though. If the trailer clears the stumps we can back it over the top of them for more room or setup ramps and just park on top each time.

There's always a way, right?

Nice pics. I'm getting excited!

Yeah the damn trailer is 26' 4" by itself! Hooked up, the whole rig is 47' 4" long!

Sounds good to me. The little parts came in today! ;D Needless to say I gots work to do! Right after a nap! (to let it cool down some!) .

Might make sense to park the Toyotas on the trailers. I think my slot is 35' or so... I doubt we'll need to set up the ramps either. I'm really hoping for some cool weather this weekend. All y'all enjoy your weekend now!

I intended to work on my R/C today, but I worked on everything but. At least I got my '65 Chevy running. I did work a little on my R/C, but it was just to get it started and the battery charged back up. I'm having a hell of a time getting situated. I bought a POS trailer and it will barely fit in my garage... (I think)... I 'm sure it will, but I have the weapons carrier in there on jack stands without any tires. The Chevy was shoved in there, but would not start etc.... Plus I had 10 sheets of 3/4" plywood and 30 2x4's piled in between. I got all of the wood stacked up nicely along the side wall. I will have to get the weapons carrier moved over to the left about a foot or two. ??? The next problem is figuring out where to stick my pool table which is also in the garage. No suggestions on where to stick it from the Toyota Boys please :P It sucks because I'm a little bit fat and it's been hard work. At this rate, I'll be Jed's size by mid August.  Anyhow, my trailer won't work right now for my R/C, so hopefully I can get that figured out soon. It's to damn hot... I hope everybody's weekend goes well. Happy 4th of July.

O.K. I am going to make a push to get my truck together for this trip. First, straighten the windsheild frame, Bill do still have that frame? Second, rollcage. May have to shop around for this. What kind of price should I be paying? What material?

It would be great to see you (and Pam too!) but jeesh, a rollcage?  One tremendous roll and now the guy wants a roll cage. ::)

Just kidding Mike.  It is on my list of things to do also, just don't think it will be done by this trip.  FYI, I have a stock rollbar (3-piece) out of John's 77  :P.  You can have it for what it is worth, which is NOTHING.

Yes I still have the windsheild frame. PLEASE take it off my hands before I do something stupid with it, like make an '83 RC a full convertable or something.

The cage should be out of .120" wall DOM tube. For a soft top truck 2" is probably best but you could get away with 1 3/4" tube. The smaller tube has tighter bends for more clearance in the truck. The big trick is the dash on these trucks. You have to tear it out or at least modify the hell out of it for the front tubes to clear and not be in the way. Price? That depends on how crazy you go. If you start with the Jegs cage and add to it it can be cheap. Not very custom and you'll have to live with a few things you might not like but it's a start. DOM tube is pricey. $4 a foot at least if you buy in bulk. You'll have every bit of 60' in it (maybe more) if you do the full family cage. Labor varies but a good fab guy will charge $40-$50 an hour and figure 10-20 hours depending on design complexity. It adds up fast but a good cage is worth every penny. If it weren't for my knee I'd say I'd do it for cheap but.... Not sure when/if I could get it done. Ask Dave about that....

Let me know when you want the windsheild frame.

Thanks for the offer but the three piece in the truck now is what already saved my ass. I have seen these factory rollbars go for close to a hundred though.

Heard that the fire was "contained" today.  It was east of Big Bear and the campgound/trails are mostly north and northwest of Big Bear.  Shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for your support, but those toyos are gonna be hard to spank on this trip. There is so much to do and so little time. I think Saturday will be the best day. Maybe we can whoop them on Sunday if they are hung over from Saturday... ;D

Title: HWY 330 closed
Post by: Bill Cooke on August 05, 2006, 08:57:29 AM
So Earl, when were you going to tell us that highway 330 is going to be closed or was that just going to be a little surprise for all of us?

State Highway 330 closure information:

August 7 to 20 - Closed to all traffic

August 21 to September 4th - Flagging from 8:00am to 6:00pm (7 days a
week)

September 5 to October 1 - Flagging from 5:30am to 8:30am and 5:30pm to
8:30pm (7 days a week)

I HATE HWY 38 but I can't see Hiltman's dually towing his RC up HWY 18 past the Crestline turn off. That's just scary.

Oops, I didn't even think of you guys. :-[  Actually this is a new development.  They were supposed to be doing the escorts/flagging thing during the entire project.  Now that the contractor has actually shown up onsite they must have found something to change their minds.

So your choices are 18 or 38.  I'd still prefer the 18 myself.  Don't know why the dually wouldn't make it....  too wide or not enough power?  There are twisty curves on both routes, sure there is a narrow part just after the Crestline cut off [this area is actually refered to as "The Narrows" even by Caltrans :o]  but I've seen trucks/trailers go through there.  Just take your time and use the damn turnouts you slow flatlander fawks!
