If they have different tail housing they are not the same trans. The 89(ish)-95 Dodge 518 (46RH) came with a tail housing that has the 4th gear unit built into it. They are HUGE. The later 46RE trans has a shorter tail housing but is all electronic and cannot be swapped in place of a 518 without a stand alone computer to drive it. The 727 3 spd trans also has a shorter tail housing but again, cannot be interchanged easily with the 518.

Many internal parts can be swapped between all these transmissions but cases and tail housing cannot. They all use the same pan so from the outside it can be hard to tell the difference. Ain't dodge fun?
